Global Trend in Employee engagement

Organizations are gradually using social media as a new way to reach customers more effectively, and to spread news of their activities more rapidly (Diercksen et al. ,2007 cited in Daniel, Isaac and Janet, 2017). The rapidity in the rise of social media is changing how organizations operate and handle their communication as Facebook can be considered as a fantastic resource to the working place and Research has shown that employees who use social media are nine percent more productive in the workplace (Daniel, Isaac and Janet, 2017). Social networks allow people to build up the relationship in society (Bridge Consulting, 2009) help employees to think outside the box which enables to increase employee engagement, foster employee ideas, and innovation enhance customer relationships and employee productivity, and enhance customer relationships (Flynn, 2011) Social media not only help employees to become more productive as they also allow employees to stay current with market trends and issues which are important to consumers as well as the general public (Daniel, Isaac and Janet, 2017).

Global trend in Employee engagement context

According to the global survey conducted by ORC international in 2014, Employee engagement index is increasing gradually in the last years.

This improvement has been mirrored in all countries except Switzerland and Singapore Netherland, Sweden, and Austria (ORC international survey, 2014).

Employee Engagement in Global Companies

The concept of employee engagement is identified by the founders - Google (Larry Page and Sergey Brin) as the foundation to make Google a great place to work through valuing their employees. Google keeps people inspired by providing them the freedom to manage their work in a flexible way to allow employees to work from home when needed, adopt flex schedules, and increase the amount of personal time employees get each year or allow employees to take their personal time in hours not days. Google ensures employees are given the most inspirational, Flexible unique work environments to think out of the box & generate new ideas to succeed Google’s goals (Culture Summit.com, 2019).

Conclusion


The concept of employee engagement that evolved in the recent era is a positive attitude held by the employees towards the organization and its values. Engaged employees lead to individual performance, increased productivity, retention, customer loyalty and profitability ultimately to the organizational performance. Engaged leadership plays a main role in employee engagement as it is impossible to have engaged people in organizations where there is no engaged leadership. At the same time, it is very important to have an appropriate organizational culture & job design in order to successful employee engagement. Employee engagement should be a continuous process of learning, improvement, measurement, and action as it has been proven throughout this article that employee engagement is a main aspect of Enhancing organizational performance through individual productivity.

I do not agree with the example that you have given in the content as google allow their employees to work from home and that creates positive employee engagement, because if they work at home employee may feel isolated and miss the social interaction from their colleagues at work, may be unable to work effectively because of distraction in the home environment. therefore positive employee engagement cannot be seen in the teleworking.

    1. Hi Chamari, Thanks for your concern. As you mentioned in your comment, employees can be isolated when they work at home. But organization can avoid that kind of situations by providing relevant equipment to interact with the team easily. Eg.Cisco Webex. As you said, yes there is possibility of being disturbed when employee work at home. But here the employees able to balance their work life & personal life well. They can attend on their urgent family commitments & it will make them happy & reduce the stress level through a relax mind & satisfied mind. This stress-free mind help employees to complete their task effectively & generate new ideas to organization.

Hi sithari, Not only google increasing employee engagement via giving them access to work at home but also google provide free organic food everyday, free health and dental facility, Gym and fitness facility, free haircut and nap pods (CBS News,2013).Organizations such as google believes educating employee will lead to engage thus google keen to provide free classes and lectures to employee will increase continues learning habit as you mentioned.

More important thing is organisation should understand the value of the concept of Employee engagement & find new approaches to implement it.

  4. I agree with above comments. In addition to that, Google keep employees inspiring through 20% time. Employees spend up to 20% of their time at work every week on projects that inspire them (Mike, 2019). With their 20% time, Google employees created Gmail, Google News, AdSense, and many other highly profitable products. This prevents burnout, increasing engagement and decreasing turnover (Mike, 2019).

    The greater the engagement of a worker, the higher the chance that he or she will "go the extra mile" and deliver excellent performance on the job. However, employees who are engaged may be more likely to commit to sticking to their current organization.For example, software giant Intuit, found that highly engaged employees are 1.3 times more likely than less engaged employees to be high performers. They are also five times less likely to leave the company on a voluntary basis(Vance,2006).

  9. hi Sitharai,Google is a very good example for transparency of employee engagement. Liane Hornsey VP People operations explains ways of engaging employees in their organization. Further she emphasized that the usage of new modern methods instead of traditional work procedures.
    Google take care of the families of the employees even by providing sports facilities & special facilities to the spouses of the employees. (Robinson Resource Group 2013)

    According to Schaufeli et al. (2002), engagement is a “positive, fulfilling, work-related state of mind that is characterized by vigour, dedication, and absorption”. Also, this was renamed as work engagement. Through the Social Exchange Theory (SET).
